Vehicle Registration Block
If you have 100 or more unpaid tolls, your vehicle registration may be blocked. To release the block, you must pay all outstanding tolls and fees or establish a payment plan. You can do this in person at any customer service center or by phone. Once all outstanding tolls and fees have been paid or an approved payment plan is established, notification will be sent to the county tax office within 7-10 business days, removing the block.
Toll Enforcement Remedies
Habitual violators who violate the order that prohibits their vehicle from operating on any NTTA toll road, bridge or tunnel are subject to vehicle impoundment. To release your vehicle, you must pay all outstanding tolls and fees, present the “notice of vehicle ban order and intent to impound” or your license plate number at any of the customer service centers, and pay any applicable towing, storage, and impoundment charges.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How will my county tax office staff know my vehicle registration block is for nonpayment of tolls and not for something else?
Your TxDMV-issued renewal notice will display “N. Tx. Toll” in the toll scofflaw remark spot (except Dallas County).
- Why is NTTA blocking my vehicle registration?
The vehicle registration block and other toll enforcement actions are intended to encourage tollway drivers to pay for services rendered and to ensure fairness to the overwhelming majority of drivers who pay their tolls. Tolls are used to repay our $9.5 billion debt, which was used to construct our roads since tax funds were unavailable to do so. Tolls also support our operations, road maintenance, and safety programs.
- How often does NTTA block vehicle registrations?
Vehicle registration blocks are processed weekly for habitual violators.
