Understanding Your Electric Bill
Salem Electric’s electric bills contain a lot of information, including terms you may not be familiar with. We’ve created a sample bill to help explain each section of your bill so that you know exactly what you pay for each month.
Kilowatts, Kilowatt Hours, and Demand
Your electric bill includes charges for kilowatts, kilowatt hours, and demand. Here’s what each term means:
- Kilowatts (kW): The rate at which electricity is used or produced, measured in 1,000 watts.
- Kilowatt Hours (kWh): The unit of measurement for electricity usage, equal to 1,000 watt hours.
- Demand: The maximum amount of electricity required at any given time, measured in kilowatts.
